She said, "Hi, how you doing?"
                                                                  He just stared at her,
and like a bolt out of the blue,
                                                                   A miracle occurred.

One day in the January of 1998, I wrote the above, the last lines of a poem called "The Miracle of Meeting". It was typical of the optimistic way I viewed life, a boy meets girl story with a happy ending. It was not based on my own relationship but it was, in its way, inspired by it.

I had first seen the future love of my life In 1968 as I stood in the bus shelter waiting for my ride to work. It was raining very hard and this girl stood at the stop in the open air, getting soaked, I recall wondering why she did not join me in the dry, did I look that dangerous I asked myself?  I was about to call and speak to her when the bus arrived, so I just gave her my best "there's nothing wrong with me," smile as we both began our journey. During the ride I looked at her, apart from being very wet she looked good, a bit too young perhaps, quite pretty and she seemed and looked like a nice person. In the days that followed I found myself looking out for her, hoping to see her, being pleased when I did, and sad when I didn't. Before long I realised I'd become hugely attracted to her, but we were yet to speak?  I put that right with a few "Good mornings", and before long we were chatting.  Much later I found out that she had once said to her Father, "There's this nice man who catches my bus, its such a shame he's got a nervous twitch!" Soon after that she told her Dad that the man with the nervous twitch had asked her out and she'd said yes.

Over four decades have passed since then, and I have often pondered on how different events would have been without that bus stop meeting, the meeting that changed my life for ever. That's why I wrote the poem with the verse that goes thus......

The Miracle of Meeting, like a bolt out of the blue
Will set your heart a beating, when you least expect it to
It will change your life forever, there's nothing you can do
If the Miracle of Meeting comes to you

Such miracle meetings exist in so many ways, was not the meeting of "Lennon and McCartney", a miracle of sorts?  Personally, I have always thought it most fortuitous, a kind of miracle, that "Parfitt met Rossi", "Galton met Simpson", "Laurell met Hardy" and "Chas met Dave". My ongoing miracle is that the girl on the bus said yes and went on that date, and for some strange, miraculous reason, after forty five years together, she still loves the man with the nervous twitch!

For obvious reasons you will soon see why this story always delights me.  It's a tale of epic romance and an  affliction that was thankfully ignored.
